JONATHAN PETRINI

Jonathan Morgan Petrini is a composer, pianist, and violinist with a Bachelor’s of Music from James Madison University. He was a violinist in both the JMU Chamber and Symphony Orchestras under the direction of Foster Beyers, as well as a performer with the JMU Steel Band under the direction of Will Alderman and Shelby Shelton. He was also an officer in the JMU Music Composition Club.

 

Jonathan, an Alexandria native, began studying classical piano at age 5 and violin at age 9, eventually joining the orchestra programs at Mt. Vernon Community School under the direction of Virgilio Joven, George Washington Middle School under the direction of Jonathan Jones, and T.C. Williams High School (now Alexandria City High School) under the direction of Dr. Tzu-Ching Tai.

 

Jonathan’s compositions have won awards in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest and the Tribeca New Music Young Composers’ Competition. As an ACPS student, he frequently entered compositions in the PTA Reflections contest, winning two national awards in addition to numerous state, regional, and local awards. For his piano performances, Jonathan has won awards in the Maryland State Music Teachers Association Piano Solo Festival and the Nancy Peery Marriott Piano Competition.

 

Jonathan has participated in several seasonal music programs. Most recently, he attended the 2023 Atlantic Music Festival at Colby College and the 2023 Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice at UC Colorado Springs. He has also attended programs at Boston Conservatory at Berklee and Colgate University.

 

Outside of music, Jonathan holds a 3rd degree Black Belt in Kukkiwon Taekwondo. He has interests in meteorology, urban planning, cartography, film, and music composition for the movie industry.
